THEY Shanshui 類山水
In the THEY Shanshui series, Yuan Hui-Li explores the intersection of traditional landscape aesthetics and contemporary conceptual frameworks. By deconstructing the form and meaning within the vocabulary of dots, lines, and planes in traditional cunfa (texture strokes), she redefines the very meaning of "Shanshui painting." Through her self-created "Yuan-style cunfa," she replaces the naturalist quality of classical texture strokes with the emotionality of feminine consciousness, effectively subverting the cunfa system that has been constructed by a male-dominated perspective for over a millennium in Chinese landscape painting. Furthermore, she supplants the traditional, unified aesthetic of subject and object—traditionally encapsulated as "sourcing from nature externally, and capturing the mind's source internally"—with these emotional texture strokes. In doing so, she shifts toward a completely new interpretation rooted in "interiority," forming an alternative, abstracted Shanshui that creates a realm for landscape painting completely distinct from antiquity.
