Bio

Yuan Hui-Li (born 1963 in Taipei) is a contemporary Taiwanese ink artist. Since the age of 24, she has dedicated herself to exploring the manifold possibilities of Eastern landscape painting. Beginning with rigorous experiments in brush, ink, and the materiality of mediums, she has developed two-dimensional works across a diverse range of techniques, materials, and forms. Furthermore, by incorporating feminine writing, she subverts traditional conventions and expands the structural syntax of landscape painting's Cunfa (texture strokes of Chinese Landscape) into an unprecedented feminine dimension. In recent years, driven by a deep concern for climate change and air pollution, she has inverted traditional ink methods and material techniques to pioneer her highly avant-garde and conceptual Fire Ink series. Her creative practice spans various mediums, including 2D painting, video, and installation art. Balancing experimentation with academic rigor, she is widely recognized as an exceptionally forward-looking and original contemporary ink painter in Taiwan's post-war ink art history.

Yuan was a member of the inaugural graduating class (1987) of the Ink Painting Division in the Department of Fine Arts at the National Institute of the Arts (now National Taipei University of the Arts). She went on to earn her Master's degree in 2005 and later obtained her Ph.D. in Art Creation and Theory from Tainan National University of the Arts in 2016. Between 1998 and 2011, she published her works under the pseudonyms Yuan Shu.

She is the first contemporary Taiwanese ink artist whose work has been acquired for the art collection of the UBS. Her accolades include being selected for the Ink Painting Innovation Award at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and receiving the Merit Award in the Ink and Color/Gouache Painting category at the Kaohsiung Awards held by the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. Additionally, her solo exhibitions have been recommended and reviewed in the Frieze Seoul/Taipei commentary guides, and her works have been featured multiple times at Art Basel in Hong Kong and Switzerland.

袁慧莉（1963年出生於台北），為台灣當代水墨藝術家。自24歲起即決定探索東方山水畫的多重可能性為創作目標，她從筆墨與媒材物質性開始進行各項實驗，發展出多元技法材質與型態的平面創作；更以女性書寫顛覆傳統法則，使山水畫的皴法結構語法開展出前所未有的陰性書寫面向；近年她關心氣候空污議題，反轉傳統墨法與材質工法，獨創出 “火墨” 系列，深具前衛性與觀念性。她的創作形式包含平面、錄像、裝置等。她的創作實驗性與學術性並重，被視為台灣戰後水墨發展史中極具前瞻性與獨創性的當代水墨藝術家。

袁慧莉是國立藝術學院（今國立臺北藝術大學）美術系水墨組第一屆畢業生（1987年），於2005年取得碩士，後又於2016年獲得國立臺南藝術大學創作理論博士學位。曾於1998至2011年間使用袁澍、袁漱為別名發表作品。

其作品為台灣第一位被英國瑞聯銀行（UBS）收藏的當代水墨藝術家。曾獲台北市立美術館水墨創新獎入選獎、高雄市立美術館高雄獎水墨膠彩類優選，個展曾獲〈Frieze台北評論指南〉為文推薦。作品曾多次參加香港與瑞士巴賽爾藝術展。
