Yuan Hui-Li is a contemporary ink artist from Taiwan. Delving deeply into the tradition of landscape painting, she deconstructs the established frameworks of tradition through different creative projects, with each project giving rise to several distinct bodies of work. These works engage with questions of subjectivity identity, using feminine writing to subvert the patriarchal principles of tradition, while also opening up new ways of thinking, in both medium and form, that depart from the past. Yuan holds that the renewal of form is indeed essential for ink painting to move toward modernity, but that innovation in meaning and content is the very core of what makes ink contemporary. As a result, her artistic practice is not only broad and diverse in scope but also more fully imbued with a contemporary spirit.
