/biography

Yuan Hui-Li (1963-, born in Taipei) is recognized as a leading figure in Taiwanese contemporary ink art. Her dedication to the arts began at the age of sixteen, leading her to become a member of the inaugural graduating class of the Ink Painting Department at the National Institute of the Arts (now Taipei National University of the Arts) in 1987. She furthered her academic and creative rigor by obtaining an MFA in 2005 and a Ph.D. in Art Creation and Theory from Tainan National University of the Arts in 2016. Between 1998 and 2011, she also published works under the pseudonyms Yuan Shu (袁澍) and Yuan Shu (袁漱), and she currently resides and works in New Taipei City.

While deeply rooted in traditional ink mastery, Yuan’s practice is defined by a relentless experimental spirit and academic depth. Her work centers on the contemporary transformation of the landscape painting (Shanshui) tradition. Her choice of media transcends the boundaries of traditional ink and mineral pigments, extending to the development of her signature Fire Ink(also known as Fiery Ink) series. Her artistic forms encompass two-dimensional works, video art, and mixed-media installations, with techniques ranging from traditional brush-and-ink to non-brush methodologies—effectively merging Eastern media with contemporary life experiences. she addresses critical global issues such as climate change, subjective consciousness, and feminine writing (écriture féminine). Her art represents a sophisticated dialectic between history and modernity, aiming to propose a new contemporary vision that constantly challenges and expands the historical framework of ink art.

Yuan views tradition as both a source of nourishment and a subject for critical reflection, navigating the delicate space between the ancient and the modern. Her representative series, such as "Discrete Islands" and " Intrinsic Potential Landscape," explore social alienation through the "materiality" of ink. The "Fire Ink Project" radically subverts traditional aesthetics to confront global smog and environmental pollution, while her "Texturizing Strokes (Cunfa) Project " introduces "Manual of Yuan’s Texturizing Strokes "—a system rooted in emotional and female-conscious subjectivity—to replace the naturalistic and male-centric semiotics of classical painting manuals. Other key works, like the hybrid forms of "THEY Shanshui " series and the video piece "PS. THEY," deconstruct the semantic structures of landscape painting, while "More is Less " series examines the temporal relationship between the visible and the hidden in accumulated ink techniques.

This groundbreaking methodology has earned Yuan significant international recognition. She was the first Taiwanese contemporary ink artist to have her works collected by UBS (Union Bank of Switzerland). Her career is marked by numerous accolades, including awards from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and her exhibitions have been recommended by the Frieze Critic’s Guide: Taipei.

Yuan’s distinguished exhibition history includes major solo shows such as “Essence Ablution: Inks, Brushes and Embodiment of YUAN Hui-Li's Shanshui Painting" at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, "Fiery Ink: Quotidian Smog" at the Providence University Art Center, "Hidden Emotion in Texture" and "Moist and Burnt: As Ink Breathes" at Tina Keng Gallery. Her international presence is further solidified through participation in Art Basel (Basel and Hong Kong) and significant group exhibitions across Asia, including "Alternative Sea for Asia" in South Korea, and several times joined exhibitions at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei  Fine Art museum and Kaohsiung museum of Fine Arts. Through her work, Yuan continues to construct a comprehensive system of contemporary ink that bridges Eastern philosophy and Western culture, seeking a path that speaks directly to the contemporary world.
