Intrinsic Potential Landscape 勢山水
The Negotiation of Chaos and Order
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, I perceived a world that appeared orderly on the surface but was internally fraught with anxiety and discord. In response, I shifted my work’s harmonious tonality toward a stark, antagonistic sense of conflict. This transition aims to manifest a paradoxical 'order' born from continuous resistance and tension. Consequently, I titled this new works the Intrinsic Potential Landscape series.
The Intrinsic Potential Landscape series attempts to express the effect of noisy images with chaotic brush and ink. On one hand, it conveys the anxiety and isolation of the pandemic through brushwork, and on the other hand, it outlines the sense of disorder in an era of information overflowing through noisy images. The world is a unified entity of chaos and order. How can landscape painting convey this paradoxical unity? This is the core consciousness I seek to convey through the Intrinsic Potential Landscape series. The chaotic, automatic brushwork and the rationally controlled block structures stand in conflicting opposition yet engage in antagonistic cooperation. The collage process itself is an attempt to interweave and negotiate between these two forces (勢): chaos and order. Following the formless, purposeless graffiti of dots, lines, and planes of ink, I reassemble defined ink blocks. This generates visual ruptures, disjuncture, and ambiguities at the viewing boundaries between the undefined and the defined. Here, the two visual forces of chaos and order intertwine, creating a paradoxical sensation that is both abrupt and mutually coexistent.
凌亂與秩序的協商
源自1992年的《得山之心 1》拼貼首作,從起始追求淡融協調的紙性墨性的筆墨表現,漸次發展為《孤山水》拼貼系列,但在2021年疫情期間,感受到世界因疫情而普遍存在著看似有序,實則內部充滿焦慮與衝突狀態,我開始將原本和諧調性轉向強烈不協調的拮抗衝突感,以表現世界充斥著在衝突中拮抗的秩序感,於是此系列另命名為《勢山水》。
《勢山水》嘗試以凌亂的筆墨表現出具雜訊影像感的效果,一方面在塗鴉筆法中發洩疫情隔離中的焦慮情緒,另一方面也以影像雜訊勾勒出資訊過溢時代裡的無序感。世界是凌亂與秩序的合一體,如何以山水畫傳達這矛盾統一的現象?這是我想透過《勢山水》傳達的感受。凌亂的自動性筆墨與理性控制的塊狀結構,衝突對立且拮抗合作。拼貼過程是試圖在凌亂與秩序這兩種力量(勢)之間進行相互交織與協商。在無定形無目的的點線面筆墨塗鴉之後,重新拼組一塊塊定形墨塊,於是非定形與定形之間產生觀看邊界的視覺斷裂、落差與曖昧,凌亂與秩序的兩種視覺力量在此交錯出既突兀又彼此共存的矛盾感。
