Discrete Islands (xuan paper Collage )
孤山水（拼貼紙本）
After moving to Jinshan Township, which is close to the sea in northern Taiwan in 1992, due to the local watery and foggy climate, it began to develop the simple and blocky structure of my Discrete Islands works , trying to express the humid atmosphere in the air with wet pen. A lot of white backgrounds represent the foggy view and the open sea view.
By using the relationship between the paper and the ink, the white edges is deliberately left behind, so that the characteristics of the paper are not highlighted by the outline of the ink, and the moist air is fully expressed.
The completion of this work marks the establishment of my personal style, and it is also the first time that I was selected as the winner of the 1992 Innovational and Experimental-Chinese ink painting Award of Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Therefore, it is very important to me.
The series of Discrete Island are used simple blocky layout to form a style with alienation. The brush works in each pieces of rock are calligraphic brushstroke, which expresses the exploration of material properties. Instead black line, the brush strokes shows the relationship between paper’s characteristic and leave blank lines. The one of technique to reorganizing of Discrete Islands are using collage. All the works of Discrete Islands are metaphor the political state in which the islands of Taiwan is isolated internationally, in the other hand, also metaphorizes the alienation of interpersonal relationships.
在1992年搬到北台灣臨山靠海的金山小鎮之後，因當地多水氣與多霧的氣候，開始發展孤山水的簡淡塊狀結構風格，試圖以濕筆表現空氣中濕潤氤蘊的感受，大量留白的背景代表那多霧的視野與空闊的海景。利用濕筆與生宣之間的紙性與墨性關係，刻意留下筆痕邊白色的暈線，如此，不用以墨線畫輪廓，紙張的特性被彰顯，而充分地將濕潤的空氣感表現出來。1992年以生宣拼貼水墨參加1992年北美館水墨創新獎獲選為入選獎的作品，對我的意義非常重要。
「孤山水」（Discrete Islands）系列採取簡淡的色彩、塊狀的佈局構成具有疏離狀態的風格，在每一塊山石裡的筆法是以書法性的筆觸，表現對材質物性的探索。生宣手抄紙的紙張特性被筆觸與筆觸之間的水暈留出空隙，形成留白的線條，這是生宣特有的質性，而透過這個內留白的水暈線條，取代了以黑色墨線畫石皴的古典技法，不畫線而自有線的塊狀山石中，讓生宣紙性被凸顯出來。使用撕貼方式重組拼貼的技法，「孤山水」以大量留白與疏離的塊狀山石結構，隱喻台灣島嶼在國際上被孤立的政治狀態，也隱喻著人際關係的疏離狀態。
