The Discrete Islands series employs alienated, block-like rock formations to articulate a state of solitude and reclusion, serving as a metaphor for the estrangement in human relationships. Through a minimalist and "Sabi" (serene stillness) style, the series explores the materiality of its media. By leveraging the unique properties of sized Xuan paper and silk, it manifests the distinct ink-and-wash nuances inherent to each material.
「孤山水」系列以疏離的塊狀山石，訴說著離群索居的孤獨心境，隱喻著人際關係的疏離狀態。也以簡、寂的風格表現對材質物性的探索，透過熟宣紙與絹本的材質特性，彰顯不同材質的筆墨內蘊。

“…in Yuan Hui-Li’s Discrete Islands series, rocks are an embodiment of illusion, and are a “specific object” (in the words of Donald Judd (1928-1994)).
